Empowerment of women in Kuria, Kenya

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Overall objective: 

The project aims at creating social and economic empowerment for women in the area of Kuria East and West by training 50 women groups on entrepreneurship and how to set up a business; women´s rights according to the Kenyan Constitution; information on HIV/AIDS and information on Female Genital Mutilation. Moreover, the project includes advocacy activities on women´s rights in the local communities. KELIN´s role in the project is to advice and train on issues relating to women´s rights according to the Kenyan Constitution. 

Immediate objective: 

1. The selected women groups in Kuria have increased their organisational capacity and their knowledge on business and entrepreneurship, women´s rights and the social and physical effects of health issues (HIV/AIDS and FGM) and domestic abuse.
2. Awareness on women´s rights and the social and physical effects of health issues (HIV/AIDS and FGM) and domestic abuse has been increased in the local communities and the attitude towards women rights has changed positively.
3. SOTENI Village of Hope Kuria has increased its visibility in the local communities and strengthened its capacity in respect of overseeing project activities and supporting women groups in social and economic empowerment. 
   

Results of the immediate objective 1: 

Output 1.1: At least 30 women groups have used the acquired knowledge on women´s rights, HIV/AIDS, FGM or domestic abuse in their own life. 

Output 1.2: At least 35 women groups have improved or established a small-scale business.  

Output 1.3: At least 45 women groups have improved their organisational work and structures, including preparing of meeting agendas and minutes as well as financial statements. 

Results of the immediate objective 2: 

Output 2.1: At least 50% of the participants at each community meeting express that they have increased their knowledge on the rights of women in National Constitution of Kenya 2010 and on the consequences of HIV/AIDS, FGM and domestic abuse. 

Output 2.2: At least 50% of the participants at each meeting have expressed that they find it important that women have equal rights and opportunities as men in society. 

Output 2.3:  At least 50% of the women interviewed at the end review of the project have expressed that the attitude concerning their rights, especially to inherit, own property or manage their own earnings, has changed positively in their family/community. 

Results of the immediate objective 3: 

Output 3.1: The local SOTENI management team implements and monitors local activities independently. 

Output 3.2: The local SOTENI management team has established a more formalised collaboration with several local authorities. 

Output 3.3: The local SOTENI management team has formulated for the future support of the women groups.
